FAQs

What is a ductless mini split air conditioner?

A mini split air conditioner is a cooling/heating system that includes two units: (1) an indoor air handler and (2) an outdoor compressor. These systems are ductless and are connected by refrigerant lines and electric wires. The mini split air conditioners provide direct heating and cooling to individual rooms.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse to provide heat. In air conditioning mode it removes heat from the indoor air and expels it outside. In heating mode it extracts heat from the outdoor air and uses it to heat your indoor space. At peak efficiency heat pumps use 1/3 of the electricity used by an electric heat unit. However, heat pumps heat most comfortably and efficiently when the temperature is above 45º F. They are not well suited to colder climates with extreme winter temperatures but can be an energy efficient solution in shoulder seasons. Some heat pumps offer supplemental electric heat, which will provide heat in colder temperatures.

A mini split air conditioner with heat pump is an air conditioning unit that can provide cool air during the hot days of summer and hot air during the cold days of winter. These ductless systems are becoming more and more popular because of it's simplicity to your climate control at home, running one machine all year long.

Why choose a mini split air conditioner?

PROS:

  • A mini split unit eliminates the work of duct, meaning there are no thermal or air losses that forced-air systems often have. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption.
  • It is much less expensive than a central air conditioner to install and operate. Your energy bill may be reduced by as much as 40%.
  • Ductless mini splits gives you direct control of the temperature of individual rooms. Only heat or cool the rooms that you occupy. The flexibility of the solution allows each person to select the temperature of their choice.
  • Since the compressor sits outside, they tend to be very quiet (depending on the model).
  • Instead of a large exhaust coming from your window or wall, it's a simple 3 inch hole connecting the mini split's indoor unit to the outdoor unit.
  • It's a safe air conditioning system to choose if compared to a window air conditioner or wall air conditioner, the connecting hole is far too small to allow break-ins into a home.

CONS:

  • A ductless mini split requires an HVAC technician to properly install the units.
  • Not many HVAC installer specialize in ductless mini splits and therefore finding a qualified installer in your area may be difficult.

    What is a BTU?

British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a unit of measurement that determines how much cold/hot air comes out of each unit. The more air comes out, the more space it needs for the air to circulate. The number of BTU's needed is usually calculated by square footage and may vary depending on the year/model of the mini split air conditioner.

    100 to 200 sq ft (usually a bedroom) - 9000 BTU

    200 to 400 sq ft (usually a master bedroom) - 12000 BTU

400 to 700 sq ft (usually a kitchen + living room) 18000 BTU

700 to 1000 sq ft (usually for large living rooms or commercial applications) - 24000 BTU

By selecting the proper model for your heating and cooling area you can ensure that occupants receive comfort all year round.

    What is SEER?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a unit of measurement used to determine cooling and heating output. Similar to miles per gallon, the higher the SEER rating the more efficient the system is at converting electricity into cooling or heating power. In 2015, mini split air conditioners that carry a SEER rating higher than 18 are considered to be energy efficient.

    What is HSPF?

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) is a unit of measurement used to determine the energy rating of a heat pump. HSPF is a ratio of BTU heat output over the heating season to watt-hours of electricity used. The higher the HSPF of a heat pump the more efficient it tends to be. In 2015, a mini split ductless heat pump with an HSPF of 8 or higher can be considered high efficiency and worthy of a US Energy Tax Credit.

What are Inverter Technology mini split air conditioners?

Inverter Technology mini-splits eliminate the on/off cycle most air conditioners typically implement drastically reducing electrical consumption by up to 40%. They operate at adaptable speeds instead of constant ones. Inverter air conditioners tend have longer life spans in general due to their speed control capabilities.

Why is it important for an air conditioner to dehumidify?

Air conditioners keep you comfortable by removing heat and moisture from the air. To do both effectively, the unit must be properly sized for your space. If the capacity is too low, you may never feel quite cool enough. When the capacity is too high, the unit produces so much cold air so quickly that the room reaches the desired temperature before the unit has adequate run time to dehumidify. The result is a cool but clammy room that can feel just as uncomfortable as one that is not cool enough.

Should I be concerned about a mini split's indoor air quality?

As long as you choose a split air conditioner brand like D Air that carries advanced filtration technology and dehumidification feature, you can rest assured that you are maintaining high indoor air quality. Our mini split units have advance filters to removes pollen, allergens, and other dust particles from the air. Improving the indoor air quality is another feature that comes standard with D Air mini split air conditioners.
